What we condition

Two jobs at the interface.

Conditioning the wheel-rail contact is two distinct jobs, and each pays back differently.

Top-of-rail

Kills curve squeal and cuts surface wear. Hotspots are individual; effect requires monitoring.

Flange

Extends wheel life. In a tight curve the wheel flange bears against the gauge face of the rail, and that metal-on-metal contact is what grinds a wheel out of profile. Conditioning the flange manages the friction there, so wheels hold their profile longer and reprofiling comes round less often.

In conditioning programmes assessed for the Swiss Federal Office of Transport, the acoustic sensing approach cut curve squeal by up to 98 per cent, wear by up to 12 per cent, and conditioning-agent use by up to 60 per cent (aramis.admin.ch, document 73688). Every hotspot is individual, and the effect holds only where it is monitored. None of this is a promise of identical results elsewhere.

Network and atlas

Love the tram. Lose the noise.

Clean, safe, comfortable solution to urban congestion, but often loud in curves.

Tram networks come first, as they have the tightest curves, and usually own both rolling stock and infrastructure. LRV and subway, commuter and freight operators and networks are in the Atlas pipeline.
